People's Garage
Madison Avenue
Skowhegan, Maine
The Bangor News obituary for Malcom "Mack" Sprague (1917-2001) offered the following clue about a Jeep dealership dating to 1945. Note that in 1955, the business moved to the Clough's Corner part of town:
"In November of 1943, Mack Sprague and Fred Cyr started an auto repair business on Madison Avenue in Skowhegan known as People's Garage. With their only one hundred dollars expended on inventory the day they opened for business, it was a meager beginning. However, Mack and Fred remained business partners until the early 1950s. In 1955, Mack purchased land and a building at Clough's Corner and People's Garage, Inc. moved to its current location. During his 40 years as an automobile dealer, Mack held franchise for Jeep, Packard, Willys, British Motor cars, Renault, Rambler American Motors and Datsun cars and trucks. As a jeep dealer since 1945, People's Garage, Inc. is the oldest Jeep dealer in the New England states. Mack always remembered his first Jeep sale and the delivered price in 1945, $933 with top."
